Over the course of three weeks this summer, 21 students were given the opportunity to participate in Communities United’s Leaders of the Pitch soccer and leadership program. In partnership with Soccer is Everything, Edmonton Minor Soccer Association North, J.D. Bracco School, M.E. Lazerte High School, and Junior Achievement, Leaders of the Pitch was an astounding success!

“My favorite part was working with the younger kids. I thought I wanted to work with kids in the future and now I am sure I do”
Throughout the program, youth would be found volunteering daily in local soccer camps, assisting with the set-up, demonstrating drills, and working side by side the coaches running the programs. They were inspired and encouraged to be role models for the younger children they were working with, as well as given opportunities to supervise over lunch breaks and mentor younger players through the duration of the camp. In addition to assisting in the camps, the students were given First Aid and CPR training, Soccer Referee Certifications, personalized fitness training and lessons, leadership and financial literacy training, and mentorship around employment, resume writing, and interview skills.
Summer goes by quickly, and these 21 students were inspired to attend a summer program that took up a third of their summer running from 8:30AM – 4PM daily.
“I liked spending the summer with some of my friends and doing something constructive
With a successful completion of the program, all youth received at $375 honorarium to help them get started with using the skills they gained throughout the program. That’s not all – through the multitude of partnerships within Leaders of the Pitch, all students were able to become referee’s primarily in North Edmonton. By July 19th, over 110 Soccer games were refereed by the participants of the program bringing in between $2750 – $3850 of youth employment income back to the community.
On top of the employment, the youth also achieved:
- 100 hours of volunteer experience
- New resumes listing all of their new skills, certificates, and experiences
- First Aid and CPR Certification
- Referee Certification
- And unmatched personal growth opportunities
All-in-all, the team behind this program and Communities United are thankful for our community and our partners in working to make this program such a success. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the youth in our community, and we cannot wait to see our participants continue on throughout the years.
